Causes of muscle complaints

  • Inflammatory: primary myositides, secondary in collagenosis, vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis
  • Drug-induced toxicity: statins, anti-malaria, ciclosporin, colchicine, L-tryptophan, omeprazole, finasteride, isotretinoin, alcohol, drugs, prednisone
  • Paraneoplastic: Solid tumors, hematological neoplasia, Lambert-Eaton syndrome
  • Infectious: viruses (influenza, coxsackie, echo, HIV), bacteria (Staph. aureus, streptococci, clostridia, borrelia, treponema), parasites (toxoplasmosis, trichinellosis, cysticercosis)
  • Endocrine: hypo-/hyperparathyroidism, hypercortisolism, Addison's disease, acromegaly, vitamin D deficiency potassium, phosphate, calcium, magnesium
  • Electrolytes: Sports
  • Overuse, trauma: muscle strain, torn muscle fibre, compartment syndrome
  • Neurodegenerative: Hereditary Myopathies
  • Metabolic: glycogen, lipid, purine metabolism, mitochondrial cytopathy
  • Neuropathogen: Spinal muscular atrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP)
