Acupuncture and rheumatic diseases

Acupuncture has been used for millennia in traditional Chinese medicine as a technique believed to restore the balance of energy in the body caused by disease. In Chinese terms, acupuncture restores the optimal flow of energy – called Qi – in the body.

It has been shown that acupuncture causes endorphin and serotonin release, which can help pain. The best trails and/or metaanalyses show that acupuncture is better than sham therapy or education in relieving pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis, chronic back pain, and chronic neck pain. Improvement however is not prolonged so therapy must be continued. Acupuncture does not help pain more than standard therapy for acute low back pain.
