The arthritis of ARF is a self-limited migratory polyarthritis of large joints that develops 2 to 3 weeks after streptococcal pharyngitis and resolves within 1 month. Rheumatic fever causes 25% to 40 of all cardiovascular disease in the world. Prompt antibiotic treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis decreases the subsequent development of ARF by 80%.
